Jacina Danica Januarie

Fellow: Department of Linguistics, MA

I am Jacina Januarie. I was born in Phalaborwa, Limpopo province. In 2008, my family moved to Cape Town. I am currently studying my masters in Linguistics at UWC. I also tutor in my department. In my undergraduate, I majored in Linguistics, German and Women & Gender studies. During final year I received an invitation to become a member of the Golden Key Honours Society. In my final year, through recognition of my hard work and determination. I was chosen to be one of the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship. As a MMUF fellow, I received training in diverse aspects of research and writing. I have had the opportunity to participate in research and dissertation writing initiatives in South Africa and in the USA offered by the MMUF programme. This stirred my interests in pursing my master’s degree and eventually reach PhD level. In my honour’s year 2019, I was chosen to be a critical food studies fellow. I like to read, analyse, critique and share knowledge amongst my peers. I would like to achieve positive change in the academy, give voice to those that are marginalized and challenge the inequalities in language.
