Robert Uys

Robert Uys is a historian and PhD candidate from the University of the Western Cape’s History Department. His field of expertise falls within the realm of the monuments, memorialisation and South African heritage. His current research involves some of the monuments dating from the 1938 Voortrekker Centenary, especially those affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church – the Dingaanstat mission station, near UMgungundlovu, and the Geestelike Eeufees Monument (G.E.M), near Nongoma. His current interest lies in issues and themes pertaining to ruination, the church’s role in land restitution, and Afrikaner identity politics. Robert is also an artist and intrepid explorer.
